Choosing the right tile finish for everyday spaces

A practical guide to balancing visual character, maintenance, and performance across residential and commercial projects.

The right finish changes how a room feels and how it performs over time. Matt surfaces create a softer, quieter expression and are often forgiving in high-use areas, while gloss finishes reflect light and bring a sharper sense of polish.

Start with the practical conditions of the space. Consider foot traffic, exposure to water, natural light, and the amount of maintenance the client is comfortable with. These decisions should come before colour and pattern.

Once performance is clear, use finish to support the design direction. Pair a tactile floor with calmer walls, or use a polished surface as a controlled focal point rather than applying it everywhere.
